Last Day of VBS in El Socorro

Today has been quite a full day! We started off by loading up the car to bring our usual program with puppets and songs to two schools in the morning. The first school, San Juan, was one of the schools we were told would be very difficult. However, when we arrived, we found that most of the teachers and students were out protesting, so only about 30 kids were there. We spent about 20 minutes sitting and talking with the kids before the puppet show and made some new friends.

The second school we visited turned out to be an all-girls school, and let me just say that the girls win. They were so well behaved and sat in neat little rows. And then, when I introduced the team, they gave each team member a round of applause before we'd ever done anything! They were an awesome group for the songs and puppet shows, and at the end, they crowded us with notebooks to get our autographs! We are famous celebrities, at least at an all-girls school in Siguatepeque, Honduras.

After lunch, we all loaded into the car again to head to El Socorro for our third and last day of VBS there. Tonight went very well from what I hear. We had a few more kids there than last night. Andruw told the story of the conversion of Saul (who later became the apostle Paul) from the chief persecutor of Christians to one of Christianities greatest missionaries and teachers through the appearance of Jesus to him on the road to Damascus. It was powerful, and Andruw rounded it off by sharing a bit of his own testimony. That's when the kids became really attentive. Praise God that they all got to hear the gospel!

We said our goodbyes to the kids in Socorro, some of whom we've been able to build relationships with. For me, that's a boy named Levi who speaks a little more English than I do Spanish. Together, we could actually have a halfway decent conversation. We're really hoping that we can visit Socorro again before we leave and perhaps get to see some of the kids again.

Here's a slideshow with a few highlights from our run of VBS in El Socorro!

Tomorrow will be one of our busiest days yet, as we will be getting up very early to bring our program to three schools. We will then be going to Iglesia Bautista Betania (Bethany Baptist Church) to run Day 1 of our VBS program there. This promises to bring in many more children, but thankfully, we've been able to iron out some kinks in our program during our first VBS. Finally, we will round off the day by having dinner with the Donatos, a missionary family here at MEDA whom our church supports.

Praises:
  • Well over 500 kids have heard the gospel in the last 5 days! So many seeds planted! Also please pray that some of those seeds bear fruit.
  • God has continued to gift us with incredible stamina each day
  • We are all learning a lot more Spanish than it seems at times

Prayer requests:
  • For endurance tomorrow and a continued focus on Christ
  • That God would prepare the hearts of the kids at VBS to receive the gospel
  • That we would continue to find new ways to build relationships and communicate with the kids and also with the Christians here
  • As we approach the end of our very scheduled week and enter into a less certain zone, that God would direct us to the ways we can best serve and minister the gospel to the churches and the community, and that whatever He provides, we would accept the opportunities to serve joyfully and with full dependence upon Him.

Thanks for reading and for your continued prayers! God is using them to do amazing things here in Honduras!

Seth

  1. Praise God for your full days of activities touching many lives in a short period. Praying your time at the next few schools you are going to will be as good or better!
I imagine you are too busy at the moment and I don't even know what your internet service is like there... but it would be cool to see some video someday, especially of how you do the puppet show. I'm curious to see it. I'm wondering if the Karenni at the Bible school here might be interested in doing something like that for their village outreaches.

  4. I am so excited about the Lord's work you all are doing. It sounds like you are planting many seeds and impacting many for Christ. Thanks for the blogs. It helps us in the states to know how to pray for you all. Seth, did you have a chance to read that David Brainerd letter written to his brother which I sent you? It's very encouraging. Bev Axen (Seth's mom)

  7. Thanks for the encouraging comments and the prayers everyone!

Dale: Definitely. So I'm hoping to put up some videos of a few of the puppet shows before too long. I need to subtitle them though because they're in Spanish. We're also planning to make our scripts available in both English and Spanish online at Puppet Resources.

PC: The only cheeseburgers we've seen here were at Wendy's, which is the only American food chain here in Siguatepeque. And they tasted just like in the states, delicious!

  8. Great Seth!
Be sure to let me know where these "Puppet Resources" are sometime. I'll be back to the States in mid August, maybe we can get together and you can show me more. And I'd love to talk more in general and hear about your trip as well.
